The Teacher Innovation Fund for Michigan City Area Schools is a small grant program for Michigan City High School and La Porte County Career and Technical Education/A.K. Smith Career Center teachers/professionals. It is designed to promote innovation and creativity making teaching more fun for professionals and much more effective in reaching and inspiring our students. Dr. Barbara Eason-Watkins, MCAS Superintendent and former Michigan City Mayor Chuck Oberlie provided the idea and the seed money from their own personal funds. They are seeking other generous and caring donors to join in the effort.
How Can the Grants be Used?
The grants are intended to encourage innovative methods of conveying curriculum concepts. Funds can be used to purchase equipment, supplies, tools for special programs or for ideas to enrich curriculum and enhance each professional’s ability to meet his/her students’ needs. Funds cannot be used to pay District personnel.
How Much Money is Available?
Each grant applicant may request up to $350. There will be multiple recipients each year. Multiple teachers may collaborate using one application.
How Will Recipients Be Chosen?
A committee comprised of individuals from the Michigan City area education and business community will review the applications. This committee will then make recommendations to the Unity Foundation Board of Directors for approval.
Applications must be submitted by Friday, October 14, 2016.
Awards will be announced by Monday, October 31, 2016.
Funds will be available Friday, November 11, 2016.
Projects must be completed by the conclusion of the current school year (June 1, 2017).

Teachers & other professionals in Michigan City High School and the La Porte County Career & Technical Education/A.K. Smith Career Center.
Recipients are required to submit a report detailing project implementation and outcomes by Friday, June 9, 2017.
